作為中國(guó)工程院院士和北京航空航天大學(xué)的教授,我熟悉王雯已有大約3年時(shí)間。在此期間,我對(duì)她出色的表現(xiàn)和孜孜不倦的求知印象頗深。她是一位深具潛力的學(xué)生,從其取得的學(xué)術(shù)成績(jī)和完成的研究項(xiàng)目便可獲悉。
2004年,她獲得保研資格并成為我親自指導(dǎo)的碩士班學(xué)生;之前經(jīng)過(guò)了重重嚴(yán)格選拔,她憑借機(jī)械學(xué)院本科平均分年級(jí)的優(yōu)異成績(jī)以及在我實(shí)驗(yàn)室實(shí)習(xí)的出色表現(xiàn)脫穎而出。進(jìn)入我的項(xiàng)目組后,她在學(xué)習(xí)和研究上似乎比以往展現(xiàn)出更大的潛力。她是一位修完我推薦的所有課程的學(xué)生,而大部分學(xué)生只是挑選一些簡(jiǎn)單的課程用來(lái)完成學(xué)分任務(wù)。坦白來(lái)講,這些課程大部分都較為困難并極富挑戰(zhàn)性。在我們實(shí)驗(yàn)室,她在許多科目上都名列。另外,她總是能超出我的期望,很快完成布置的任務(wù)。正如我所預(yù)想,她在機(jī)械工程學(xué)上比其他學(xué)生的前景更加樂(lè)觀。
談到研究能力,我認(rèn)為王雯非常出眾,從以下幾個(gè)方面可以說(shuō)明。首先,在 “可逆反應(yīng)類型壓榨機(jī)虛擬裝配”項(xiàng)目中,一共有3個(gè)階段:Solidworks建模、MultiGen Creator修改和Vtree設(shè)計(jì)。不管在那個(gè)階段,她總能個(gè)掌握工具的用法,明白怎么使用工具并且指導(dǎo)該項(xiàng)目其他成員。此外,她的畢業(yè)研究項(xiàng)目“基于微波變換的曲線和表面整流和壓縮沖程”也是很好的證明。她是一個(gè)研究該領(lǐng)域的學(xué)生,沒(méi)有實(shí)驗(yàn)室的同伴能夠提供有效幫助。她還自學(xué)了微波理論, Matlab (一種用于算法開(kāi)發(fā)、數(shù)據(jù)可視化、數(shù)據(jù)分析以及數(shù)值計(jì)算的高級(jí)技術(shù)計(jì)算語(yǔ)言和交互式環(huán)境)等等,并且都取得了優(yōu)異的成績(jī)?!凹?xì)分曲面幾何建模及其在數(shù)控加工上的應(yīng)用”的項(xiàng)目仍然在進(jìn)行當(dāng)中,她在小組中發(fā)揮著核心作用。過(guò)去3年,她不斷展示著出色的研究和學(xué)習(xí)能力。作為她的專業(yè)導(dǎo)師,我對(duì)她的綜合表現(xiàn)十分滿意。我敢肯定不論是獨(dú)自一人還是在團(tuán)隊(duì)中,她都能夠很好地學(xué)習(xí)和有效地進(jìn)行研究。

Dear Sir or Madam:
Now I’m very pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Wang, Wen’s admission to your Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering. She is one of the best students I have ever tutored.
In my capacity as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor in Beihang University, I have known her for about three years, during which she impressed me with her excellent work and persistence in pursuing intellectual achievements. She is a very promising young student and you can find this by seeing her academic records and finished research projects.
She got to be my student in 2004, when I gave her a direct admission into my master program. She stood out through the rigorous selection because her undergraduate GPA ranked in School of Mechanical Engineering, and she did a wonderful job as an intern in my lab. After in, she seemed to have released more potential than ever in studying and research. She is the only one student who finished all the courses that I recommended, while most students just picked some easy ones to meet their credits requirement. Frankly, many of these courses are real tough and challenging. She got top scores in many courses and her GPA ranked the first in our lab. Besides, she can always finish her assignments much faster and better than I expected. As expected, she gained a more profound perspective in mechanical engineering than any other student here.
As for her research ability, I think it is considerably outstanding, which can be illustrated from the following aspects. First, in the program of “Virtual Assembly for Crushing Mill of Reversible Reaction Type”, there were three phases: modeling in SolidWorks, modification in MultiGen Creator, and programming in Vtree. In any phase, she was always the first one who could master the tool, understand how to implement it and then guide other members of the program. Second, for her graduation project “Curve and Surface Fairing and Compression Based on Wavelet Transform”, she was the only student studying in this area, without any help from her peers. Then she studied Wavelet theory, Matlab, etc, all by herself. And the result proved excellent. The project “Subdivision Surface Geometry Modeling and Its Application in the NC Machining” is still going on, and she also plays a central role in the project. During the three years, she has consistently demonstrated an outstanding research and learning ability. As her academic tutor I feel satisfied with her overall performance. I’m sure she can learn and conduct research effectively either independently or in groups.
Wang, Wen has a good command of English, so there is no problem with her in studying or working in your school. I believe her solid academic background, good personality and a resolution in ME research will enrich your community. I also believe the advanced facilities and highly honored scholars in your school will eventually satisfy her intellectual curiosity, and place her on a new academic track.

如果單論專業(yè)素質(zhì)的話,相信清華、上交、北航、北理工、哈工大、華科等傳統(tǒng)理工科強(qiáng)??隙ㄓ斜人鼜?qiáng)的人,但終從眾多候選人中脫穎而出的卻只有她一個(gè)。其中一個(gè)不可忽視的原因在于王雯有一封來(lái)自中國(guó)工程院院士—— 她的碩士研究生導(dǎo)師—— 強(qiáng)有力的推薦信,王雯站在了巨人的肩膀上。
學(xué)校的教授是“勢(shì)利眼”嗎?為什么他們看到院士或者知名學(xué)者的推薦信就刮目相看?
這一點(diǎn)我們稍微深入想一下就明白了。
首先,能夠爭(zhēng)取到在院士手下做項(xiàng)目或者讀研的機(jī)會(huì),就已經(jīng)證明該學(xué)生是經(jīng)過(guò)了精挑細(xì)選的;
其次,以往經(jīng)過(guò)了牛人的指導(dǎo),該學(xué)生在眼界、鍛煉機(jī)會(huì)、科研能力方面都超過(guò)了同齡人,比如,有多少學(xué)機(jī)械的學(xué)生能夠在院士的指導(dǎo)下做“可逆反應(yīng)類型壓榨機(jī)虛擬裝配”項(xiàng)目?
后,一個(gè)院士或者知名學(xué)者的誠(chéng)信度是很高的,他們不至于為了一個(gè)學(xué)生而說(shuō)假話,如果他們的推薦信很“給力”,那么被推薦的學(xué)生一定有過(guò)人之處。
“的人總是在影響著他周?chē)娜嘶蚴?,主?dòng)地或者非主動(dòng)地?!苯咏娜耍慈舅麄兊摹跋蓺狻?,能夠不知不覺(jué)中提高自身的實(shí)力。
英國(guó)數(shù)學(xué)家哈代在讀劍橋大學(xué)的學(xué)期對(duì)于當(dāng)時(shí)的偏應(yīng)試教育體系很不適應(yīng),差點(diǎn)轉(zhuǎn)到歷史系,幸運(yùn)的是他后來(lái)及時(shí)地遇到了一位真正的數(shù)學(xué)家,以致哈代在《一個(gè)數(shù)學(xué)家的辯白》中對(duì)他深表稱頌:“我的眼界初是由樂(lè)甫(Love)教授打開(kāi)的,他只教了我?guī)讓W(xué)期,卻使我對(duì)分析的嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)概念有了初的了解。我從樂(lè)甫教授那兒獲益大的是他建議我讀Jordan著名的《分析教程》(樂(lè)甫教授畢竟首先是一名應(yīng)用數(shù)學(xué)家),我永遠(yuǎn)也不會(huì)忘記這部著作所給予我的震撼,不會(huì)忘記那本書(shū)對(duì)我這一代數(shù)學(xué)工作者的激勵(lì)。讀了這部著作,我次懂得了數(shù)學(xué)的真諦;也是從那時(shí)起,我走上了一個(gè)真正的數(shù)學(xué)家的道路,對(duì)數(shù)學(xué)樹(shù)立了正確的目標(biāo),產(chǎn)生了真誠(chéng)的激情?!?/p>
以上我們舉的例子比較極端,沒(méi)有多少人可以接觸到院士或者級(jí)數(shù)學(xué)大師的機(jī)會(huì)。但生活中的“牛人”其實(shí)特別多,只要是那些在學(xué)術(shù)上或者事業(yè)上高你n個(gè)等級(jí)的人,都可以作為主動(dòng)接近并學(xué)習(xí)的對(duì)象。
小琳是北大政府管理學(xué)院的一位才女,她自幼就有一種造福大眾、獻(xiàn)身公益的遠(yuǎn)大理想。她向我講述了一位牛人對(duì)她產(chǎn)生的影響:
“對(duì)我而言,大四時(shí)聽(tīng)過(guò)的一場(chǎng)名為‘中國(guó)教育NGO的現(xiàn)狀、發(fā)展以及面臨的挑戰(zhàn)’的講座在觀念重塑方面具有重要意義。講座的主講人叫高廣深,2003年受福特基金會(huì)(The Ford Foundation)資助赴美國(guó)哥倫比亞大學(xué)攻讀MPA學(xué)位,曾經(jīng)供職于政府、企業(yè)與Early Childhood Care and Development等機(jī)構(gòu),目前是陽(yáng)光文化基金會(huì)(Sun Culture Foundation)的秘書(shū)長(zhǎng)。
