加拿大是聯(lián)邦制，加拿大政府由三級構(gòu)成：聯(lián)邦政府（Federal Government）、省/區(qū)政府（Provincial Government）和市政府（City/Municipal Government）。

聯(lián)邦政府不設(shè)教育部，教育職責(zé)歸各省政府負(fù)責(zé)。由于加拿大地域廣闊，各省之間經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展水平差別較大, 各省建立了適合本地發(fā)展、相對獨(dú)立的教育體制。

加拿大高等教育總體上保持了較高的水準(zhǔn)，每年吸引眾多國際學(xué)生前往求學(xué)和深造。

加拿大政府認(rèn)可的高等教育機(jī)構(gòu)主要分為大學(xué)和學(xué)院。絕大多數(shù)大學(xué)都是公立的。攻讀本科一般需要3-4年時間，碩士研究生需要1-2年，博士研究生需要3年。

各類學(xué)院側(cè)重培養(yǎng)應(yīng)用型專業(yè)技術(shù)人才，一般提供大專文憑和各種證書課程，學(xué)制2至3年，不頒發(fā)學(xué)位；部分學(xué)校也開設(shè)學(xué)制1至2年的課程，完成學(xué)業(yè)后可轉(zhuǎn)入正規(guī)大學(xué)二、三年級繼續(xù)攻讀本科課程。

目前，在加拿大以公司形式注冊的私立學(xué)校數(shù)以千計，其專業(yè)、學(xué)科設(shè)置和師資配備等尚無有效監(jiān)控。中國學(xué)生申請這些私立學(xué)校時，務(wù)必謹(jǐn)慎。
